A mold shapes the outside of a part. It has never once, in the history of casting, shaped the inside. That's the core's job, and it's the part of the process most people outside a foundry never think to ask about.
Picture a pump casing. The outside is straightforward — the mold handles that the same way it handles anything else. But a pump casing isn't solid. It has passages running through it, cavities a pattern alone can't produce, because a pattern only shapes what the sand packs against from the outside. You can't ram sand into a hollow that doesn't exist yet. So you build the hollow separately, as its own object, and set it inside the mold before the metal ever gets poured.
That separate object is the core, and in a no-bake shop, it's built the same way the mold is: sand mixed with a liquid resin binder and a catalyst, packed into a core box instead of against a pattern, and left to cure at room temperature. No oven here either. The chemistry does the same work it does in the mold — harden the sand into a shape that holds — except this shape gets surrounded by molten metal on every side instead of holding metal back from one.
That's the real difference between a mold and a core, and it's not a small one. A mold contains the pour. A core gets drowned in it. It has to survive full immersion in molten metal, hold its shape and its position while the metal solidifies around it, and then come apart cleanly at shakeout so what's left is a clean, hollow passage instead of a plug of sand nobody can remove. Get the core wrong — soft spots, gas that doesn't vent, binder that breaks down too early — and you're not looking at a cosmetic defect. You're looking at a casting that doesn't do the one thing it was designed to do: move fluid through a passage that was never actually there.
Most cores get a wash applied before they go into the mold — a thin coating that resists metal penetration and gives the finished passage a cleaner surface than raw sand would leave behind. It's a small step, easy to treat as an afterthought. It isn't one. That surface is the inside of the part your customer is going to run fluid through for the next twenty years.
This is why core making doesn't get filed under "molding" in a no-bake shop, even though the sand and the binder are the same. The mold shapes what you can see. The core shapes what the part actually does. On a pump casing, that's not a side detail — it's the whole reason the part exists.
Nobody buys a pump casing to look at it. They buy it to move fluid through a passage a pattern could never have made on its own.
